Hallux rigidus

Hallux rigidus The term hallux rigidus simply means “rigid” (immobile) big toe. This rigidity is manifest as a restriction of movement of the large metatarsophalangeal (MTP) joint due to joint wear. The toe can only be raised with difficulty (or not at all). This usually makes push-off of the foot very painful. In pronounced cases, rigid foot orthoses should be fabricated to immobilize the big toe and prevent the pain experienced as the foot rolls forward to push off. However, if the hallux rigidus is mild and in its initial stages, meaning, the joint is restricted in its motion but not yet fully rigid, PROPRIO® foot orthoses can provide relief to the MTP joint. This is achieved by minor pedorthic modifications to the foot orthosis. The relief is rapidly noticeable and most sufferers experience improved heel-to-toe movement.
