Hallux valgus

Hallux valgusA hallux valgus deformity refers to an angulation of the big toe towards the second toe with the formation of a ball-shaped prominence. A predisposition towards this condition is usually inherited, but can also be favored by other causes. Hallux valgus is almost always associated with splay foot (pes transversoplanus) and is thus a consequence of flattening of the transverse arch of the foot. It is particularly important for sufferers to buy shoes sufficiently wide in the forefoot area. Unfortunately, foot orthoses cannot counteract the pull of the tendon in order to spread the big toe back away from the other toes. That said, the load on the ball of the big toe can in fact be reduced somewhat if the muscles can be made to more effectively stabilize the longitudinal arch. The is the basic principle of the PROPRIO® foot orthosis.
