Injuries from sprains (distortion)

Distortion of the ankle is a frequent problem particularly in ball sports, among which basketball and volleyball players are primarily affected. Any athlete who has played basketball or volleyball for several years will almost certainly have had some kind of sprained ankle. Such situations tend to be relatively traumatic in nature, i.e. a basketball player jumps into the air and lands on the foot of a fellow player, causing the foot to roll outward forcefully. In addition to capsular ligament strains, potential injuries resulting from this necessarily include tearing of the outer ligaments of the foot or, worse still, a fracture of the lateral malleolus.
